Does Laser Hair Removal Really Work?

Laser Hair Removal Siperstein Dermatology

Are you tired of waxing, shaving and tweezing? Of course you are! Not only is it time consuming, but it’s also painful and can leave your skin irritated.

If you’ve considered getting laser hair removal but don’t know if it will work for you, we’re here to help! Laser hair removal is a great option for almost anyone, and the experts at Siperstein Dermatology are committed to helping you get the smooth, hairless and silky skin you’ve always wanted!

How does it work?

Hair removal lasers use energy to destroy hair follicles by emitting a light that is absorbed by the pigment (color) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the hair follicles under the skin and inhibits future hair growth. The laser even does this without harming the skin around the hair follicles! After a series of sessions, you’ll experience permanent hair reduction.

How many sessions does it take?

Since the hairs on your body cycle through different phases, and laser hair removal can only treat those that are in the active phase, you will need six to ten sessions to treat most of the hairs. It is important to note that periodic maintenance may be needed and certain changes, like pregnancy, can cause hormonal hair growth in the laser-treated area.

Which areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Almost anywhere! The most common places our patients ask for laser hair removal are legs, armpits, back, chest, upper lip, chin and bikini line. Men who have razor bumps often treat their necks as well. The great news is that we can treat multiple areas during the same visit so you can maximize your time and results!

Am I an ideal candidate for laser hair removal?

As long as the hair you’d like to remove isn’t white or grey, you are a candidate! Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair, simply because the laser beam targets the pigment (color) in the hair. However, we have specialized lasers that can safely treat all skin types and colors. Our hair removal experts are highly skilled in getting the best results for patients of varying skin and hair color!

How do I prepare for treatment?

Relax, sit back and let us do the work! To get the best results, we recommend that you avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis prior to treatment because hair needs to be present to attract the laser. We recommend shaving your target area as shaving preserves the base of the hair, which creates the best result for laser hair removal.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Pain level varies from person to person, but most patients describe the laser as a snap of a rubber band or a hot pinch that goes away quickly. But, because we always provide our patients with the newest technology and best treatment options, we only use the newest lasers that provide a safe, less painful treatment with immediate cooling of the skin.
