SPF vs. UPF: What’s the Difference, and Why Does It Matter for Your Skin?

When it comes to sun protection, you’ve probably heard of SPF, but UPF might be new to you. Both are essential for keeping your skin safe, but they refer to different types of protection. Understanding how they work can help you make smarter choices when it comes to preventing sun damage and skin cancer.

What Is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it applies to sunscreens.

SPF measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, which are the rays that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. For example, if you normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying SPF 30 should allow you to stay out for 30 times longer (about 300 minutes) without burning, as long as the sunscreen is applied correctly.

Important points about SPF:

  • SPF only refers to UVB protection.
  • To protect against both UVB and UVA rays, always choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
  • Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.

What Is UPF?

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and it applies to clothing and fabrics.

UPF measures how much UV radiation (both UVA and UVB) can penetrate a fabric and reach your skin. For instance, a shirt with a UPF rating of 50 allows only 1/50th (or 2%) of UV rays to pass through, offering excellent sun protection.

Important points about UPF:

  • UPF-rated clothing provides broad-spectrum protection.
  • Not all clothing is UV-protective unless it has a UPF label, it may not block much UV at all.
  • UPF clothing is especially helpful during extended time outdoors or in water activities where sunscreen may wear off.

Should You Use SPF or UPF?

The best sun protection comes from using both.

  • Use SPF on exposed skin, such as your face, neck, ears, and hands.
  • Wear UPF-rated clothing to cover your arms, legs, and torso, especially during prolonged sun exposure.
  • Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses for added protection.
