Perioral Dermatitis: What It Is and How to Treat It

If you’ve noticed small red bumps, scaling, or irritation around your mouth, nose, or eyes that won’t go away, you may have perioral dermatitis. This common rash often affects women and can easily be mistaken for acne or eczema.

What Causes It

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin. Common triggers include:

  • Topical or inhaled steroids (including nasal sprays and inhalers)
  • Fragrances and heavy creams
  • Lotion-infused or scented tissues
  • Fluoridated toothpaste
  • Makeup or skincare products with irritants
  • Hormonal changes, stress, and heat

What It Looks Like

It appears as small red or flesh-colored bumps and dry, sometimes burning skin, most often around the mouth but occasionally near the nose or eyes.

Treatment

At Siperstein Dermatology Group, we focus on calming inflammation and restoring your skin barrier. Your plan may include:

  • Stopping topical or inhaled steroids (unless medically necessary)
  • Simplifying skincare with gentle, fragrance-free products
  • Prescribing topical or oral medications like metronidazole, tacrolimus, or doxycycline

What You Can Do

  • Keep skincare minimal and fragrance-free
  • Use a mild cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, and sunscreen
  • Switch to fluoride-free toothpaste
  • Avoid steroid creams unless directed by your provider

If you think you may have perioral dermatitis, our board-certified dermatology providers can help identify triggers and create a personalized treatment plan.
